Release News
- Fatal Error Protection was a feature that was originally supposed to come to WordPress 5.1, but due to security concerns, it was punted to a future release. The security flaw is actually a pretty interesting case, so if you wish to learn more, as well as the new approach that is being taken in order to achieve the Fatal Error Protection end goal, hop over here.
- WordPress 5.2 is going to bring some big improvements to Gutenberg blocks, including a bunch of bug fixes, a block management tool, and the ability to nest additional blocks within the cover block, which will actually make that a very useful interface tool.
- Speaking of WP 5.2, the beta 1 dropped a few days ago. The target date for the full release is April 30, 2019.
Extending WordPress
- The new Theme Sniffer plugin sniffs your code to ensure it adheres to WordPress coding conventions. If they smelt it, you dealt it…time to start refactoring.
- Advanced Custom Fields Pro 5.8.0 beta4.1 was pushed out for testing recently. Lots of bug fixes and a good indication that the full release isn’t too far off.
Grab Bag
- There’s a new set of WP accessibility auditing tools which you can install to run automated tests. If you don’t know why this would be handy, then you probably don’t understand why you should make your sites accessible to begin with and in that case, I recommend this article as intro reading.
- Kids these days… WordCamp Miami drew more than 100 kids to their Kid’s Camp, and these kids sound a lot smarter that I was in 5th grade. Of course we didn’t have computers then so for fun I was forced to read dungeons and dragons novels while my older brother listened to the newly released Alice In Chains Facelift album, forever bringing to mind visions of sorceresses and werewolves whenever I hear “Bleed the Freak” and … wait … what was I talking about?
