Welcome to the tenth installment of my WP Digest. This is the blog version of our internal bi-weekly email which we use to inform, enlighten, and titillate our minds on some of the latest happenings in WordPress-land.
Release News
- WP 4.4 “Clifford” is out. I’ve been shouting about some of the important new features here for weeks (oEmbeds, Rest API, responsive images, etc.) but you can read the full feature list here.
- Automattic released Windows and Linux versions of its desktop application. They look and function exactly like the Mac counterpart, unlike the TI-84 version, which I still haven’t gotten to load.
- Two-Factor Authentication is getting more love and will become a part of the WP coreonce the team has worked out some kinks and has focused on a clear path. Check out the latest discussions.
- Additional labels for custom post types and custom taxonomies were made available in WP 4.3 and 4.4. Familiarize yourself if you are into labels…personally, I like to think I transcend labels.
- WP 4.4 removed the “Get Shortlink” button. But you can get it back if that pissed you off.
Extending WordPress
- Jetpack, a large and popular plugin, has added WebP image format support.
- Since we all need to deeply learn javascript now, here are a couple of examples of React-based themes that were released recently and make use of the REST API to deliver content.
- REST API 2.0 Beta 9 is out.
- You want staging error logs on WPE? You got ’em.
- Hookr has a new plugin that shows you what actions and filters are fired as pages load in WP. Clicking the tags shows you details about the action. This could be very useful for debugging sites and seeing exactly what is happening behind the scenes.
WP Drama
The dirty side of dev.
- There’s a bug in the way that WordPress builds URLs that is causing issues with the new responsive images in WordPress 4.4 over SSL. It’s a pretty easy fix, but I wanted to call it drama to get people interested.
- Drupal is looking into a decoupled architecture. You jelly, Drupal?
Misc
I don’t know where to file this crap.
- WPEngine published a blog post “WordCamp US 2015 in Photos“.
- WordCamp US video sessions are now available on WordPress.tv.
- For weirdos who know what the hell they’ll be doing a year from now, tickets are already on sale for WordCamp 2016, Dec 2-4th in Philly.
- In typical WPEngine style, they’ve released another infographic “2015 Stats of the Word“. They really love their infographics!
- Torque published a “How to Learn JavaScript as a WordPress Developer” article. I predict 8,000 of these types of articles in the next few months.
- This list of 17 code editors is only getting included to show that there are way too many code editors.
