This bi-weekly serves to inform and enlighten our minds on latest happenings in the sprawling countryside we call WordPress Land.
Release News
- WordPress 4.9 “Tipton” is out, despite a brief release delay, and here is the official release announcement to be your personal sherpa up WordPress Mountain.
- In the ever evolving and rapidly heating debates around Gutenberg, the latest salvo has been fired over using iFrames to support meta boxes because apparently this is 2002 and that’s the best we can come up with. I guess that’s being dropped now, which is cool. I’ll continue to just wait in the wings until things actually start being released, because really, who knows what’ll happen at this point?
Extending WordPress
- I’ve never used the WP-SpamShield or Plugin Organizer plugins before, but I’ll tell ya – the best way to get your plugin on peoples’ radars is certainly through a public and messy argument! The argument ultimately resulted in WP-SpamShield getting booted from the WP Plugin Directory and even more words of recrimination. None of this should really be surprising though, as 2017 is pretty much officially the “Year Without Chill©®™“.
- Weglot, a plugin and service to make multilingual website support much easier, is blowing up and hit €44,000 in monthly revenue last month. I haven’t used this service but I’ve heard great things and look forward to giving it a shot sometime soon. I know my tens of users are clamoring to read this crap in Klingon.
Grab Bag
- Want to attend WorldCamp Europe 2018? Early bird tickets are now on sale for the June 14-16 event in Belgrade, Serbia for those optimistic folks who believe there will still be a world left by then.
- A couple issues ago I discussed a weird pricing technique that the folks at Camp Press were using for their Iceland event. Apparently the organizers read what I wrote and made some adjustments based on my feedback and the feedback of others. While that’s certainly very cool because this community thrives on iterations and feedback…it also means that people are actually reading what I’m writing here…
